Chapter 1

The sky was a deep, bloody red, as if the very heavens were bleeding. New Orleans lay in ruins, its once-vibrant streets now a desolate wasteland. Flames engulfed the crumbling buildings, casting a hellish glow over the devastation. A massive fissure tore through the ground, stretching from the Mississippi River to the distant horizon. The earth seemed to be splitting apart, revealing a chasm of smoldering darkness. The air reeked of brimstone and smoke, and the only sounds were the distant rumble of thunder and the crackle of flames.

The vision was one of utter destruction, a testament to the end of days. The city's iconic landmarks – the St. Louis Cathedral, Jackson Square, Bourbon Street – were nothing but smoldering rubble. The once-majestic oak trees were now charred skeletons, their branches like bony fingers reaching toward the crimson sky.

In the distance, a dark storm brewed, its leading edge a swirling vortex of ash and smoke. The winds howled, whipping the flames into a frenzy as the very fabric of reality seemed to unravel.

But amidst the destruction, a lone figure sat atop a ruined building, surveying the devastation with an air of quiet contemplation of the destruction all around. Shrouded in shadows, the figure's presence seemed almost otherworldly, as if they were a dark specter summoned by the chaos.

Their features were indistinct, shrouded by a hood that cast a dark, impenetrable shadow over their face. Yet, as the winds died down for a fleeting moment, the figure's gaze lifted, and their eyes gleamed like lanterns in the dark.

Black as a piece of the abyss, with golden pupils that seemed to burn like embers, their eyes appeared almost hypnotic.

And then, the figure slowly turned its head, their gaze sweeping across the ruins as if searching for something - or someone. Their eyes locked onto a point in the distance, and their expression twisted into a hint of a sinister smile.

The figure's eyes flashed with an inner fire as they turned to look...

Leila jolted awake, her scream echoing through the darkness. Her heart raced, and her sheets were drenched with sweat. She gasped for breath, her eyes scanning the familiar contours of her bedroom. But the image of the figure's black and golden eyes lingered, seared into her mind like a branding iron.

She threw off the covers and swung her legs over the side of the bed, her feet dangling in the air. The room spun around her, and she felt a wave of nausea wash over her. She buried her face in her hands, trying to shake off the vivid dream. As she looked out her bedroom window, she murmured to herself, "It's just a dream...it's just a dream..."

Just then, her phone rang, shrill in the silence. She jumped, her heart racing, as she reached over to answer it. " Hey, Leila, it's Sarah," her best friend's voice chimed in on the other end of the line calming her down. "I'm just calling to remind you that our flight to New Orleans is in a few hours. Are you ready?"

Leila's mind was still reeling from the dream, but she forced herself to focus. "Yeah, I'm almost packed," she lied, realizing she hadn't even started gathering her things yet.

"Great! I'll pick you up at 10 am then?" Sarah asked, sounding cheerful. Leila nodded, even though Sarah couldn't see her. "Sounds good. See you then."

As she hung up the phone, Leila felt a shiver run down her spine. New Orleans. The same city from her dreams. She pushed the thought aside, telling herself it was just a coincidence. But the memory of that dream still lingers in the back of her mind.

Two hours later, Leila zipped up her last suitcase. She was dressed in a white tank top with a jacket and cutup jeans, her long charcoal colored hair was braided into a single braid and placed over her left shoulder.

Her dark grey eyes were weary as she zipped up her traveling bag. Was she making a mistake? What if visiting the city that's been haunting her dreams? She clutched at her crescent moon pendant as she stared out her window.

She's been having these strange dreams for months now, and they've only intensified as she gets closer to her nineteenth birthday. She's tried talking to her mother about them, but she's never given her straight answers. She knew that there was something going on with her, and she knew she had to visit the city to find out why.

Her musings were soon cut short by her friend Sarah honking her car outside her window. " Come on Leila, we're going to be late, and we need to hurry to catch our flight." Looking away from the window she hurried to pick up her bag and suitcases. But as she was leaving she cast one last glance at her room, hoping that this wouldn't be the last time she'd get to see it.

Soon the pair were cruising down the highway on their way to the airport. And her best friend Sarah was driving. Sarah was a beautiful girl with deep blue eyes, with a head of long blonde hair, she was the most fashionable of the pair, and you can see it in her attire. As she was wearing a beautiful blue dress with matching earrings.

" Did you really have to bring so many bags?" Leila asked, glancing back at the car seat filled with the bags. " But, of course, we're going to one of the wildest party towns, so a girl's gotta look her best" Sarah giggled, causing Leila to sigh fondly before shaking her head.

Soon the pair arrived at the airport and, after closing up Sarah's rental, grabbed their bags and suitcases and began making their way towards their boarding area. The airport was a hub of activities as they made their way through, with passengers coming and going and with the intercoms blaring out messages over their heads. Soon the girls made it to their waiting area.

And after another hour, they were searched before being allowed onto the plane. But as Leila looked out at the now cloud filled sky after the plane took off she couldn't help but feel like this trip was about to change her life forever.

Chapter 2

As they disembarked from the plane, Leila and Sarah followed the signs to baggage claim. The airport's bustling atmosphere energized them after the flight.

Inside the airport terminal, they collected their luggage and made their way to the ground transportation area. Natural light spilled in through the large windows, illuminating the vibrant airport decor. " Time to experience N'awlins!" Sarah exclaimed, shouldering her bag.

Leila smiled, her dark gray eyes shining with anticipation. "Hold on party girl let's get to our hotel and then get settled in first." This caused Sarah to laugh, she linked her arms with her friends as they continued walking through the airport.

They stepped outside into the warm Louisiana air, where taxi and ride-share drivers awaited passengers. Leila and Sarah joined the taxi line. A friendly driver, sporting a Saints cap, greeted them with a thick New Orleans accent. "Y'all need a ride, cher? Where y'at headed?"

Sarah provided the address of their French Quarter hotel. As they drove, Leila gazed out at the city's eclectic mix of old and new architecture, her expression thoughtful. Sarah chatted with the driver, asking for recommendations on must-see attractions.

Their taxi stopped in front of a charming hotel, its ironwork balconies and grand entrance inviting. " Alright, y'all, we're here!" the driver announced with a smile. "Y'all enjoy N'awlins, ya hear?"

Leila smiled politely. "Thank you."Sarah tipped the driver, and they stepped onto the sidewalk. The sounds, scents, and energy of the city enveloped them.

"Wow, this is amazing!" Sarah exclaimed her excitement palpable .Leila's eyes scanned the surrounding area, her expression serious. "Let's get checked in so we can begin to enjoy our day."

As they entered the hotel, Leila and Sarah were enveloped in its charming atmosphere. The lobby's high ceiling, adorned with intricate moldings, seemed to transport them to a bygone era. Plush carpets, rich wood accents, and elegant chandeliers added to the hotel's historical charm.

A warm smile greeted them at the reception desk, where a friendly receptionist, sporting a name tag reading "Danielle," welcomed them.

"Hello, ladies! Welcome to Hotel Lafitte. How y'all doin' today?". Sarah replied, "We're doing great, thanks! We're excited to explore New Orleans I've heard this place has some of the best parties in the country."

Danielle's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Well, you've come to the right place! We're happy to have y'all. May I have your names, please?".Leila provided their names, and Danielle efficiently checked them in.

"Y'all are booked in room 314. It's a beautiful room with a balcony overlooking Bourbon Street. You'll get to experience the city's vibrant night energy right from your doorstep." As Danielle handed them their room keys, Leila asked, "Can you recommend any good restaurants or cafés nearby?"

Danielle nodded enthusiastically. "Oh, absolutely! Café du Monde is just a block away for beignets and coffee. For dinner, try Danton's Gulf Coast Seafood or Coop's Place for some delicious Cajun cuisine."

Sarah's eyes widened in excitement. "Sounds amazing! We'll definitely check those out."With their keys in hand, Leila and Sarah made their way to the elevator. As they ascended to the third floor, the sounds of the lobby faded, replaced by the soft hum of the elevator.

Their room, 314, was a cozy haven with a plush king-size bed, adorned with elegant linens and pillows. Floor-to-ceiling windows led to a narrow balcony, where they could step out and take in the sights and sounds of Bourbon Street.

Leila opened the balcony door, letting in the vibrant sounds of the city. She breathed in deeply, feeling the energy of New Orleans. Sarah flopped onto the bed, grinning. "This is perfect! Let's freshen up and hit the town." Leila smiled, matching Sarah's energy as her friend began picking out their outfits.

As they strolled through the French Quarter, Leila and Sarah blended in with the throngs of tourists. The narrow streets, lined with historic buildings, boutiques, and restaurants, pulsed with energy.

They walked along Bourbon Street, taking in the vibrant atmosphere. Live music spilled out of bars and clubs, while street performers and artists added to the city's dynamic tapestry.

Sarah snapped photos of the ornate ironwork and grand architecture, while Leila admired the eclectic mix of shops and galleries. As they turned onto Royal Street, the scent of freshly baked beignets and fried dough wafted through the air, enticing them.

"Food!" Sarah exclaimed, her eyes scanning the street vendors and cafés. Leila laughed. "You're always thinking about food!"

Sarah grinned. "Priorities, Leila! Let's grab some lunch." They stopped at a street vendor, offering an array of mouthwatering options. " What'll it be, ladies?" the vendor asked, his Cajun accent warm and inviting.

Sarah opted for a spicy shrimp po' boy, while Leila chose a crawfish étouffée wrap. As they waited for their food, they chatted with the vendor, learning about the city's hidden gems and local favorites. With their delicious meals in hand, they continued their stroll, savoring the flavors and sights.

"Wow, this is amazing!" Sarah exclaimed, biting into her po' boy. Leila nodded, enjoying her étouffée. "The food here is incredible." As they walked, they discovered a quaint courtyard, tucked away from the bustling streets. A beautiful fountain, surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant flowers, provided a serene oasis.

As they settled onto a bench in the quaint courtyard, surrounded by the soothing sounds of the fountain and the warmth of the sun.

As they finished unwrapping their meals and began eating, Leila closed her eyes, savoring the flavors. Halfway through, Sarah nudged her playfully. "And you said coming here was a bad idea," she teased, a mischievous glint in her eye.

Leila chuckled, her dark gray eyes sparkling. "I never said it was a bad idea. I just had some...reservations about coming here." Sarah raised an eyebrow. "Reservations? You mean because of those weird dreams?"

Leila's expression turned serious, her gaze drifting away. "Yeah...those." Sarah's tone softened. "Hey, we're here together. Whatever happens, we'll face it as a team." Leila smiled, her unease momentarily forgotten. "Thanks, Sarah. You're the best."

As they continued eating, the tranquility of the courtyard enveloped them, momentarily pushing aside Leila's concerns. But as they continued to eat, that's when Leila got a nagging feeling that they were being watched and she was right.

Leila's eyes met the strangers who was watching them, and she felt an electrifying jolt. Her heart skipped a beat, and her senses came alive as her gaze land upon him.

He stood tall, around 6'2", with broad shoulders and a chiseled, athletic build that seemed carved by the gods. His raven black hair cascaded to land atop his shoulders in lush waves, framing his breathtakingly handsome face. Piercing black eyes with golden flecks sparkled like stars, hypnotizing Leila. His sharp jawline, angular cheekbones, and full lips made him irresistibly, heart-stoppingly gorgeous.

A black leather jacket accentuated his rugged edge, while a crisp white top hinted at refinement. An intricate golden amulet hung from a delicate chain around his neck, glowing subtly in the sunlight.

"Who's that?" Leila whispered, her voice barely audible. The stranger's gaze never wavered, his eyes locked onto Leila's.

Sarah turned to follow Leila's gaze. "Who's who?". Just then, a group of laughing tourists strolled past, momentarily blocking Sarah's view.

As they cleared the path, the stranger was gone. Sarah's eyes scanned the courtyard, confused. "I don't see anyone." Leila's eyes scanned the area frantically, but the stranger had vanished.

Sarah's concern grew. "Leila, what's wrong?"

Leila hesitated, unsure what to say. Seeing that the stranger wasn't anywhere to be seen, she decided to placate Sarah's concerns.

Leila shrugged, attempting to downplay the encounter. "Must've been just some curious local. Let's forget it and enjoy our lunch."

Sarah raised an eyebrow. "You sure you're okay?". Leila nodded, forcing a casual tone. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just my imagination running wild."

Sarah seemed skeptical but let it drop. "Okay, if you're sure." Soon the two friends continued eating, the atmosphere returning to normal. However, Leila's gaze occasionally drifted around the courtyard, searching for another glimpse of the stranger.

Sarah chatted about their plans for the rest of the day, and Leila listened, trying to focus, but no matter how much she tried she couldn't shake the feeling that there was something going on.

Chapter 3

After a long day of exploring New Orleans' vibrant streets, Leila and Sarah returned to their hotel, exhausted but exhilarated. As they entered their room, Sarah kicked off her shoes. "Time to get glammed up!".

Leila chuckled, selecting a sleek black and silver dress from her closet. "You're determined to paint the town red, aren't you?" Sarah grinned mischievously. "Of course my friend Vera is waiting for us at The Raven's Perch, And we need to make a good first impression."

As they dressed and applied makeup, Leila's thoughts drifted back to the mysterious stranger from the courtyard. His piercing gaze lingered in her mind. With their makeup and hair perfected, they slipped on their heels and headed out into the balmy New Orleans evening.

Just as they stepped outside, Mardi Gras celebrations erupted around them. Colorful floats and masks danced down the street, accompanied by infectious jazz rhythms and laughter.

"Whoa, Mardi Gras is already in full swing!" Leila comments, catching a strand of purple beads. Sarah grinned, feeling the excitement. "Perfect timing! Let's go celebrate."

Their destination was The Raven's Perch, a cozy bar in the French Quarter. Vera, Sarah's friend, promised an unforgettable experience.

As they navigated through the joyful chaos, The Raven's Perch beckoned, its warm glow a haven amidst the revelry. Inside, couples snuggled in plush armchairs, while locals laughed and chatted over craft beers. Sarah spotted Vera first. "There she is!"

Leila followed Sarah's gaze, curious about the woman who had captivated her friend where she saw a beautiful light brown girl sitting at one of the private booths . Vera's radiant dimpled smile illuminated the dimly lit bar. Her curly brown hair cascaded down her back like a rich, velvety waterfall. Her eyes sparkled with warmth, fringed with thick lashes that added to their allure. Elegant, long gloves encased her slender hands.

" Their she is!" Sarah squeals, running towards Vera. Who smiled at her. "  Heeeeey cookie I'm glad you could make it" she then turned to Leila and smiled. " Hey, I'm Vera reimonenq and you must be the best friend I've heard so much about".

Leila smiled, feeling an instant connection to Vera's warm demeanor. "Nice to meet you, Vera. You're just as fabulous as Sarah described." Vera chuckled, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "Well, thank you I do try hard to keep up appearances."

As they hugged, Leila noticed Vera's elegant gloves, intrigued by the subtle mystery they added to her overall elegance. Sarah grinned mischievously. "Now that we're all acquainted, let's get some drinks and celebrate Mardi Gras in style!"

Vera nodded, leading them to the bar. "I have just the thing. My friend, Jacques, will hook us up with the best cocktails in town." As they approached the bar, a charming bartender with a thick French accent and a bushy mustache greeted Vera warmly.

"Chérie, it's so good to see you!" Jacques exclaimed, kissing Vera's cheeks. Vera smiled. "Jacques these are my friends Sarah and Leila and they came her to celebrate Mardi Gras with me." Jacques's eyes twinkled. "Enchanté, mesdames. Welcome to The Raven's Perch. Tonight, we celebrate Mardi Gras in style, oui?"

Vera leaned in. "Surprise us, Jacques. Something special." Jacques winked. "I have just the thing. My signature 'Midnight in the Quarter' cocktail. Magical, I promise."

As Jacques expertly mixed their drinks, Leila admired the bar's intimate atmosphere. Vintage jazz posters adorned the walls, and soft candlelight illuminated the plush armchairs.

Sarah nudged her discreetly. "Hey, check them out," Sarah whispered, nodding toward two handsome strangers on the other side of the bar. Sarah immediately began fixing her appearance, even going as far as reapplying her lipstick.

"You're not wasting anytime are you?" Leila teased and Sarah grinned. " Of course, not now. I'm going to go work my magic. See you girls in a few minutes" she said, before sauntering over to the two handsome guys. " That girl doesn't waste any time does she?" Vera asked. Leila laughed, " Of course not if. Theirs one thing I've learnt about Sarah is that she doesn't act coy if she is someone she likes. She's approaching him but I'm not complaining though because it gives me more time to get to know my new favourite local".

As Leila said this, Jacques placed down two glasses of black liquid on the counter. " It's on the house" he winked at them both before he walked away to attend to another customer. " Go on try it" Vera said taking a sip of of her drink".

Leila took a hesitant sip of her drink and her eyes widened as an explosion of different flavors burst across her tongue. " Holy crap why is this so good" she commented, taking another sip. But Vera only smiled and took another sip.

Leila asked, "So, tell me about yourself." "What do you want to know?" Vera asked, looking at Leila over the rim of her glass."Anything, since I don't really know anything about you apart from what Sarah's told me," Leila replied.

Vera laughed as she placed down her glass and laced her fingers together. "Well, where do I start? You already know my name, so I guess there isn't much. I'm not that interesting, to be honest." Leila smiled at her. "I doubt that. I've only just met you, but I can tell you're already one of the most interesting people I've met."

Vera laughed while playing with one of her curls. "Flattery will get you everywhere... well, I guess I can tell you that I'm an occult historian."

Leila's eyes widened. "An occult historian? aren't those historians who research myths and legends and other creepy stuff like that ?" She asked. Vera chuckled, playing with a curl. "Yeah, I know, it sounds weird. But I love digging into the spooky side of New Orleans."

Leila leaned in, her curiosity piqued. "What got you into that?".Vera's expression turned thoughtful. "Growing up here, you can't help but feel the city's vibe. All the mysticism, voodoo, and ghost stories... it's like the city's got its own energy."

Leila nodded, captivated. "I can see that. There's something special about this place." Vera smiled. "Exactly! And I'm obsessed with uncovering its secrets. From Marie Laveau to the Rex Organization, there's so much hidden history."

As Vera spoke, her passion was contagious. "By the way, do you have family here in New Orleans?" Leila asked. Vera's smile faltered for a moment, and she glanced away, her eyes scanning the bar."Uh, yeah... I have some family around," Vera replied vaguely.

Leila sensed a hint of evasiveness. "Oh, that's great! Are they from here originally?" Vera's gaze drifted back, but her expression remained guarded. "Yeah, they've been here for a while."Leila noticed Vera's sudden reluctance to share more." Any siblings?" Leila probed gently.

Vera's smile returned, but it seemed forced. "Just me. I'm an only child." Soon am awkward silence settled between them, thickening the air. Leila sensed she'd touched a sensitive topic. Vera's gaze drifted to her gloves, her fingers tracing the intricate patterns.

The silence stretched. Just as Leila wondered how to gracefully shift the conversation, Vera looked up. "Alright, I think you've picked my brain enough for now," Vera said with a sly smile. "It's my turn to pick yours."Leila's curiosity piqued, she leaned in."Fire away," Leila said. Vera's eyes sparkled mischievously.

"Tell me, Leila, what brings you to New Orleans?"Leila hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. But Vera's genuine interest put her at ease. Well apart from the fact that Sarah has been wanting this trip for months now the truth is I've been having these weird dreams about this place". Vera who had her glass halfway towards her lips, immediately perked up as she heard this.

" Dreams? What kind of dreams?" She asked curiously. Leila pursed her lips as she swirled the remaining liquid in her glass around as she stared into it. " Their Weird dreams to be honest, but I've been dreaming about the end of the world, and somehow it always starts right here" she said, shaking her head. She placed the glass on the counter and looked up to see Vera looking at her intently.

" I know they sound weird but they're so vivid that sometimes I feel like they're real. I know I must sound like a nut job ranting about the end of days", she said. But Vera only shook her head. " I don't think so, Cher, my grandmother always said that dreams are just our minds trying to tell us something. So it's up to us to learn what our minds are trying to say" she said, and then looked at Leila.

"The world isn't as simple as it seems. Leila Sometimes things that look normal but aren't" and it's up to us to look beneath the surface" she said. But before Leila could respond they saw Sarah skipping over towards them with a large smile on her face. " Someone seems to be in a good mood", Vera commented.

"Hey, did you have fun?" Leila asked Sarah, who smiled. " I sure did. You girls ready? I need to get some beauty sleep for my date tomorrow" she said. " Yeah, I'm just about ready to head out," Leila said. They then looked at Vera, who smiled.

" Yeah, I'm ready, and I'll walk you girls back to your ready" she said. Soon the trio stepped out into the chill night air and began walking towards the hotel, they could hear the distance sounds of partying in the distance. As they continued walking home, the vibrant Mardi Gras celebrations gave way to darker, quieter streets. The flickering streetlights cast eerie shadows on the pavement.

Vera led them through narrow alleys, the sound of their heels echoing off the old buildings. In the distance, the hotel's neon sign shone like a beacon. " Almost there," Vera said."Thanks for walking us home, Vera," Leila said. Sarah nodded, yawning. "Yeah, thanks for everything. "Vera smiled. "Anytime, mes amies."

Leila turned to Vera. "We really appreciate it. You made our night."Vera's eyes sparkled. "I'm glad you enjoyed it." Sarah som chimed in. "We definitely did. The drinks, the music... and those guys." Vera chuckled. "I'm glad Sarah found some eye candy."

As they shared a laugh, the wind picked up. At first, it was a gentle breeze but quickly strengthened. Leila's hair whipped around her face.Sarah clutched her arms, shivering. Vera's smile faltered as the streetlights flickered. And then, a piercing shriek cut through the night air.

And was soon followed by a chilling silence.
