Chapter 1

The Alliance's Awakening Trials were finally over.
The proctors from the Capital called me a fighting prodigy. I shattered the all-time pack record. That alone scored me an exceptional admission offer to the Royal Elite Academy.
I ran home, screaming with excitement.
"I can finally go to the Royal Elite Academy! I can go to the Capital to see Rowan and Julian!"
Dead silence answered me.
Four stuffed wolves sat on my creaky bed. I sewed them myself.
Dad, Mom, my brother Rowan, and my childhood crush and fated Mate, Julian.
Their button eyes stared at me coldly.
They kept me silent company, just like they had for countless suffocating nights.
I looked down. A year ago, my twin sister Willow got terribly sick.
Everyone said it was my fault. My awakened power was too aggressive. My dominant aura crushed her weak inner wolf.
So, I was banished. Sent to this drafty, broken shack on the edge of the territory.
The first night here, a rogue wolf howled and almost broke my door down.
I curled up under the bed, hiding my scent. I was too terrified to even whimper.
I desperately reached out through the pack mind-link to my parents, my brother, and Julian. Over and over again. I called their phones.
No one answered.
At dawn, Mom finally texted back.
"Stop calling. Hearing your name makes Willow's wolf sick."
I made these four stuffed wolves. One for each of them.
They slept with me on freezing nights when the fire died out.
They listened to my progress in every trial. They listened to me swallow my unheard heartbreak.
But right now, hot tears rolled down my face, and I didn't hug them.
After being abandoned for so long, I was finally ready to cut ties.
No looking back.
Chapter 1
I stood in the rotting shack. Freezing wind howled through the window cracks.
My wolf let out a weak whimper.
I trained like a maniac for a whole year to get that Royal Elite Academy offer.
But I couldn't even afford a fresh piece of meat.
I scrubbed tables at the filthiest bar in town between training sessions. Just to afford some cheap scraps to survive.
Nobody would ever guess I was the Alpha and Luna's daughter.
My parents, Rowan, and my twin sister Willow lived in the main Pack House.
They had a private heated spring just to soak in the moonlight and strengthen their wolves. Even Willow's walk-in closet was five times bigger than my entire shack.
Growing up, they always blamed me. They said I siphoned Willow's strength in the womb.
So she deserved everything. And I was just a monster who needed to repent.
The trials ended a week ago. I'd shattered the all-time record.
But my phone stayed dead quiet. No one in the Pack chat cared.
Until today.
My screen lit up. My mother, Sylvia, finally texted.
"Come to the Pack House. We need to discuss your academy contract."
Staring at those words, my foolish heart still skipped a beat.
They finally saw my hard work. They finally cared about me, right?
I grabbed my jacket, shifted, and sprinted home through the woods.
I pushed the Pack House doors open. The heat from the fireplace washed over me.
I froze in the hallway.
My parents, Rowan, and my fated Mate—Julian.
They were all crowding around Willow on the couch. The one with the "weak inner wolf" who couldn't even hold her shift in the basic trials and barely passed.
Four fancy coming-of-age gifts sat on the coffee table.
"Willow, I got you a custom combat training plan. You have to join me at the Alliance Military Academy!" Rowan looked at her with pure adoration. Bossy, but leaving no room for argument.
"Don't listen to him," Julian chimed in. He gently unwrapped a piece of candy for her. "The best Healer Academy in the Capital is perfect for you. That way, I can watch over you every day."
I stood in the dark corner. Like a thief trespassing on someone else's turf.
Willow saw me first.
"Harper..." She flinched violently. Her eyes instantly welled up with tears. Like I was a wild beast about to tear her apart.
She bit her lip and looked at them pitifully. "I should go back to my room. I don't want my scent to upset Harper."
But the second she turned around, I caught it. A sharp, sour spike of smugness in her scent.
She shot me a secret, mocking smirk. Pure evil.
The temperature in the room plummeted.
"What's with that look? Who are you trying to intimidate?!" Sylvia shot up and stormed over to me.
There was no pride in her eyes for her genius daughter. Only guilt and rage.
She glared at me and gave an absolute command. "I called you back to inform you. You are not going to any academy in the Capital."
My ears rang. My heart almost stopped.
"What did you say?" I thought I heard wrong.
"You are not going to the Capital!" Sylvia shrieked. "Your power is too volatile. Your aura is bloodthirsty! The proctors might think you're a weapon, but to me, you're just a wild monster you can't control! If Willow smells you in the Capital, your dominant aura will crush her wolf! Are you trying to kill your own sister?"
My father, Marcus, sat on the couch and scoffed impatiently. "We finally had a peaceful year. Don't start trouble again. You're the older sister. Just let her have this."
"What about me?" I stared at them, digging my nails into my palms. "I broke the record to get that early admission. Where am I supposed to go?"
Rowan sneered, looking down on me. "Just go to the Patrol Academy on the border. What's the big deal?" He planned out my life like it was nothing.
The Patrol Academy?!
Everyone knew what that meant. You get sent there, you're permanently shut out of the Pack Council. You spend the rest of your life patrolling the forest borders.
A dull ache spread from my bleeding palms to my very soul.
I refused to shed a single tear. Instead, I turned to the man who had been dead silent.
"Julian." My voice shook as I called his name.
That was my Mate. The one supposed to share my soul, life, and death.
But right now, he was forcefully suppressing our bond. The mate bond was supposed to burn bright and pull us together.
Instead, he was rejecting me.
He kept his head down. He never once met my eyes.
"Harper, be a good girl." Julian's voice was low, but he spoke the most hypocritical words in the world. "You're naturally strong. A fighting genius. Even at the Patrol Academy, you can fight your way to the top. Staying in the Pack as a high-ranked warrior... isn't that great too?"
He paused.
His eyes drifted to Willow's closed door. I saw a protective urge in his gaze that I had never, ever received.
"But Willow is different. She needs someone to take care of her."
Chapter 2
Growing up, my strength was my biggest crime.
Just because I was stronger than Willow in the womb, they gave her all the love and gave me all the blame.
And Julian? He used to be the only person in the world who told me, "Harper, having ambition isn't a sin."
Now, even he had chosen Willow.
"Speak! Don't play dumb!" Rowan impatiently raised his voice.
The next second, his oppressive Alpha aura slammed into me.
My knees buckled.
He was forcing me to submit! Forcing his own sister, who just shattered the pack record!
Looking at these so-called family members. Looking at the defense and disgust in their eyes. The last sliver of instinctive hope in my chest died completely.
"Fine." I swallowed the blood in my mouth and spoke without any emotion.
The tension vanished. The suffocating Alpha aura withdrew.
They all let out a breath of relief and put on their fake smiles.
"Now that's what an older sister should act like." Marcus offered a half-hearted praise. His eyes were already drifting back to Willow's door.
Next up was the gift exchange to celebrate the end of our coming-of-age trials.
An absolutely absurd, brutal comparison.
What did Willow get?
A custom-made, wildly expensive moonstone necklace from Mom. The newest Apple Watch from Rowan. An unlimited black card from Dad.
And Julian. My Mate. He gave her a stunning gown for the Royal Elite Academy's welcome banquet.
And me?
Mom casually handed me a tarnished, ordinary wolf-fang necklace.
Rowan dug out a dog-eared, falling-apart beginner's combat manual and tossed it at me.
Dad gave me a rough, beat-up tactical backpack.
Julian couldn't even look me in the eye. He handed me a cheap, scratchy training shirt without even a box.
"You train a lot, you go through clothes fast. This is practical." His voice couldn't hide his guilt.
I didn't question them. I didn't fight.
Like a soulless puppet, I numbly accepted their trash.
Sylvia checked her watch, sounding hesitant. "Dinner's almost ready. Are you... staying to eat?"
Staying.
I was an Alpha's bloodline too. I was her flesh and blood. Yet she used the word "staying."
"No." I forced a smile that looked worse than crying. I turned and walked to the door.
Outside, the biting wind instantly blew away the suffocating hypocrisy of the Pack House.
I walked straight to the dumpster on the corner.
Without a shred of hesitation, I threw those four so-called "gifts" right in. Box and all.
Go to hell.
My wolf roared wildly inside me. This was step one to severing my ties to this pack.
Trudging back to my shack on the muddy path, my phone buzzed.
It was Willow's newest post on the pack network.
[Thank you to my family and Julian for being here. I'm the luckiest girl in the world.]
Attached was a cozy group selfie taken in the Pack House dining room.
The four of them surrounded her. Their smiles were blinding.
Right in the middle of the table was a massive celebration cake. It was covered in crystal-clear Moon-ice Berries.
A rare herb meant to strengthen a weak inner wolf.
But it was pure poison to a pureblood grey wolf like me. One bite would shut down my lungs!
Every side dish on the table was her favorite.
Right. They never cared about me.
I locked my screen and pushed open my creaky door. The shack was as cold as a freezer. Dead and empty.
I walked to the bed and picked up the four stuffed wolves I made.
I used to rely on them to survive countless freezing nights.
Now, I turned them all around to face the wall.
Then, I opened the nightstand drawer and pulled out an old, yellowing photo.
It was a photo of me and Julian. Taken right after our mate bond awakened, before he left for school in the Capital.
In the picture, his eyes were full of love. He held me so tight, like I was some rare treasure.
On the back was his handwritten promise:
[Harper, my Mate. I'll wait for you at the Royal Elite Academy.]
The ink was fading, but it still stung my eyes.
I stared at it for two seconds.
Then I grabbed the edges and ripped it straight in half.
Chapter 3
I had to escape this territory. I needed money.
I went back to the dirtiest bar in town. Staring at the clock on the kitchen wall, I slaved away for fifteen hours a day.
So what if I was the combat prodigy who broke the record?
Right now, my hands were frozen red, soaking in harsh industrial cleaner as I scrubbed mountains of greasy plates.
If I just got my 800 bucks for the month, I could buy a ticket out of here.
At noon, the bar's entry bell chimed.
"Alpha! Luna!" The owner was a low-ranking wolf. His terrified voice pierced the noisy dining room. He bared his neck in complete submission.
I walked out carrying a tray of clean glasses and froze.
It was my parents, Rowan, Julian, and Willow.
They had just come from the fanciest boutique in the Capital. They were holding shopping bags of all sizes.
And me? I stood in front of them in a ragged apron covered in slop and grease.
Like a pathetic clown.
Sylvia's cold eyes swept over me. She scowled in disgust. "Harper, must you humiliate this family like this?"
I clenched my jaw and kept my mouth shut. I didn't need dignity right now. I needed cash.
Carrying my tray, I kept my head down and tried to walk around them.
"Harper..." Willow suddenly blocked my path, her eyes red.
She reached out her perfectly manicured hands, trying to grab my filthy sleeve. "Please don't be mad at the family. I know you're jealous I get to go to the Capital..."
I dodged her by instinct.
I didn't want to ruin her expensive designer dress. More than that, I just didn't want her touching me.
But the second I stepped aside...
Willow let out a bloodcurdling scream.
She threw herself backward in a dramatic fall and crashed onto the greasy floor!
"It hurts... it hurts!" Willow clutched her chest, gasping for air. Tears streamed down her face. "Harper's aura is attacking me! She hates me so much!"
We didn't even touch, and she claimed my wolf was attacking her.
What a pathetic lie!
But nobody even gave me a chance to explain.
"Harper!" Rowan let out a furious roar.
His Alpha command slammed into my back!
The sheer force pinned me to the corner. My knees crashed into the floor. A tearing pain ripped through my chest. The heavy taste of blood instantly filled my throat.
I gasped for air, glaring at the people in front of me.
Julian rushed over instantly.
He scooped Willow off the floor and held her tight. He was so incredibly gentle with her.
Then, he looked up at me. His eyes were full of disbelief and pure disappointment.
"Harper, how did you get so vicious?" Julian's voice was cold and accusing. "Even if you lost your Capital spot, you can't try to kill Willow! She's your own sister!"
I swallowed the blood in my mouth. Clenched my teeth. I didn't beg.
What was the point of explaining?
To them, fragile Willow was always the victim.
And I was always the jealous monster.
"Take her home. Call the Pack Healer." My father Marcus shot me a freezing glare.
They swarmed around crying Willow and left the bar without a backward glance.
Leaving me completely alone. I used the wall to drag myself up under the cold, disgusted stares of the owner and customers.
Evening hit.
The fifteen-hour shift was finally over.
I dragged my broken body to the register.
"Boss, today is payday." I wiped my hands, trying to keep my voice steady. "One full month. 800 bucks."
This was my lifeline.
It was my freedom, bought with shredded pride, dignity, and blood.
The low-ranking owner avoided my gaze. He wouldn't look at me.
His hands shook as he pulled a thin envelope from the drawer and handed it over.
The envelope felt weightless.
My heart dropped. I ripped it open.
Empty.
Not a single cent inside!
"Where is my money?!" I grabbed him by the collar. My eyes flashed red. My wolf howled like a maniac inside me.
"Harper... calm down!" The owner shook in pure terror, his voice trembling. "It was the Luna... The Luna sent the Head Enforcer to confiscate your entire paycheck!"
I froze like I'd been struck by lightning.
"The Luna said..." The owner gulped and stuttered, "She said to consider it a deduction for your monthly pack tax..."
Pack tax?
I lived in a drafty, rotting shack without even firewood for the hearth, and she was charging me 800 bucks for pack tax?!
"That's not all..." The owner lowered his head, his voice shrinking. "The Luna also said... you attacked Miss Willow today. So this money is going toward rare herbs to soothe Miss Willow's wolf..."
All the oxygen vanished from the room.
I looked down, staring at the empty, worn-out envelope in my hands.
My blood ran cold.
Chapter 4
I stormed into the Pack House, seeing red.
"Give me my money back!"
My eyes were bloodshot. I glared at my mother sitting by the warm fireplace.
"That is my survival money! I washed plates in filthy water for a whole month!"
The air in the living room turned to stone.
Sylvia elegantly took a sip of her black tea. She didn't even blink.
"Watch your tone when speaking to your Luna." She set her cup down and scoffed.
"You've been draining the Pack's resources for years. What's wrong with taking a little of your money to buy Willow supplements? Besides, you're going to the border Patrol Academy anyway. You don't need money there."
So casual. So entitled.
I was shaking with rage. I tasted sickening blood in my throat.
Ten years of suppressed pain and anger finally boiled over.
"Draining resources?!" I screamed hysterically. "When you threw me into that drafty shack, did you even think of me as your daughter?!"
"When the rogues were breaking my door down, where were you?!"
"When I had a 102-degree fever and desperately mind-linked you for help, did any of you answer me even once?!"
Dead silence filled the hall.
Only the firewood crackled in the hearth.
My father Marcus's face instantly went dark.
Alpha aura slammed into me again!
The force made me grunt and stumble back two steps.
He stood up, pointed at the door, and roared. "You're out of control! The Pack gave you life! Every drop of blood in your veins, everything you own, belongs to the Pack!"
"If you throw one more tantrum in here, I'll throw you in the dungeon right now! I'll chain you up with silver! You aren't going anywhere!"
The dungeon.
This was my father.
Just to make me shut up, he was willing to treat his own flesh and blood like a prisoner of war.
I stood my ground and suddenly laughed.
The last ridiculous craving for family in my heart turned to ash and blew away in the wind.
Julian stood up from the couch. Frowning, he walked up to me.
He looked down at me like he was giving out charity.
"Harper, stop causing a scene. Submit to the Alpha." He sighed, his eyes full of blame. "If you just behave and go to the Patrol Academy, I'll visit you regularly. I'll take care of you."
Take care of me?
Looking at his utterly hypocritical face, my wolf whimpered in sorrow.
Enough.
I stared dead into Julian's eyes and unleashed a freezing aura.
"I, Harper, reject you, Julian, as my fated Mate." I said the ancient words coldly. "Our bond is dead."
Julian's tall frame violently staggered!
His healthy face went deathly pale.
"You..." He clutched his chest, panting heavily. His knees went weak, and he almost fell to the floor.
He looked at me in disbelief. His eyes were filled with panic and despair like never before.
He felt it.
It was the agonizing pain of a soul being ripped apart. It was an eternal loss.
I wiped the tears from the corners of my eyes and gave him one last look.
I didn't say another word.
I turned around and walked out into the raging blizzard.
Back in the broken shack.
In the dark, I booted up my battered old laptop.
The screen cast a blue glow on my face.
In my inbox, the top-tier admission file from the Royal Elite Academy was still flashing quietly.
Go to the Capital? Go to the place where Rowan, Willow, and Julian were? Go and keep being the ugly backdrop to their perfect lives?
With a cold face, I opened the file.
Without hesitation, I hit "Decline."
Then, I opened the other unread email in my inbox.
It was from Obsidian Academy. The absolute best in the werewolf realm, located in the distant Neutral Territory.
They sent me their highest-tier special recruitment offer.
They didn't care about family background or bloodlines.
Over there, only absolute power mattered.
I took a deep breath and smashed the Enter key.
"Accept."
The contract was sealed.
Just then, the phone on the table lit up.
It was a pack-wide announcement from Luna Sylvia in the internal channel:
[Tomorrow night, we will hold a farewell banquet for Willow at the Pack House before she leaves for the Capital. Everyone must be on time.]
Right after, she sent me a direct order:
[Harper, you must publicly apologize to Willow tomorrow. Otherwise, you can forget about going to the Patrol Academy.]
I looked at the screen, a cold smirk on my lips.
I opened the channel settings. My finger hovered over the red option, and I pressed hard:
[Renounce Pack]
The whole world finally went quiet.
I stood up. I didn't take a single thing with the Pack's mark on it.
I just slung on my beat-up canvas backpack with a few of my own old clothes inside.
I pushed the door open and walked into the silent, snowy night.
At the border transit station, a midnight cross-city bus heading to the Neutral Territory was slowly pulling out.
I stepped onto the bus and sat in the very back row.
I watched out the window as the city that held a decade of my humiliation and pain faded away.
From now on, the world was wide open. My past would be buried forever.
And I was never coming back.
