Dumped the Don for Impregnating My Bestie

My best friend, the youngest daughter of the Brown family, Jessica, had just given birth, and I went to see her at the hospital with my husband, Frank James. When I held the little guy in my arms, I could not help but tease him, "Be good, baby boy. Your Godparents are here to see you." Frank, who had been standing at the side quietly, suddenly said, "I'm not his Godfather. He should call me 'father'." He was the Don of the James family and my husband, so I thought I misheard him as I looked up at him in disbelief. Frank smiled and repeated, "That's right. You didn't mishear me. This is…

He was the Don of the James family and my husband, so I thought I misheard him as I looked up at him in disbelief. Frank smiled and repeated, "That's right. You didn't mishear me. This is my baby. I was with Jessica the day your father had the accident. What a night of passion that was."
I was stunned. I felt my throat tighten, unable to believe what was happening. It took me a long time before I finally squeaked something out of my throat, "But we just registered our marriage at the church yesterday…"
Frank laughed and pulled me into his arms, nuzzling his lips against my ear. "Don't overthink this. It was over between Jessica and me a long time ago. We just see each other occasionally when we get lonely."
After that, he teased, "But I bet you didn't know that before I met you, she used to be the person I trusted most. She's also my first woman."
I leaned into his arms stiffly, feeling cold all over.
Three years ago, I stayed in a strange family and fought hard for Frank. Three years later, I could also let him go without hesitation and give him up to the other woman.
I no longer wanted this man.
Chapter 1
Damienne's POV
By the time I regained consciousness, I had returned to the James family villa.
I looked around. This was my home with Frank, but right now, it looked unfamiliar. Our wedding picture hung in the middle of the living room. Frank was looking at me tenderly in the picture, and I remembered how he made me feel like I was the one he loved most in this world.
However, that look on his face now stood out like a sore thumb to me.
When Frank came home, the wedding gown in the closet was cut into pieces. The wedding picture was smashed on the ground and pieces of the glass were all over the floor. I did all that.
Frank stood at the door, silently waiting for the cigarette between his fingers to burn out. After that, he came to my side and held my hand. "Are you hurt?"
I yanked my hand out of his, and the anger in me exploded in his face. Tears streamed down my face as I questioned him, "Why?"
Frank was taken aback. He reached out to wipe the tears from my face. "Are you asking why I married you?" He did not even pause as he took the answer for granted.
"You're mature, calm, and willing to sacrifice helping your family to help me instead. You're the most suitable woman to be the Donna of the James family. It's different with Jessica. She's used to being a pampered upper-class socialite, and has always been spoilt. She can't even complete the simplest mission handed out by the family."
The more honest Frank was, the more my heart ached. I could not stop trembling, and Frank came up to hug me. "All right. Stop overthinking this," he tried to comfort me in a low voice. "It's not possible between me and her, and we'll only be in contact because of the baby."
I struggled out of his arms and screamed uncontrollably, "Did you even think about me when you decided to have a baby with her?" I was bent over, hardly able to breathe from the pressure of the cruel truth.
Frank took a step forward, and I instinctively stepped away from him. He was silent for a moment, convinced that I was not able to accept any of this because of the succession rights. "Don't worry. Our child will always be the rightful heir to the James family."
I stared back at him. "Do you see me only as a woman who has eyes for only your fortune and succession rights?"
Frank's face fell. "Stop it, Damienne."
He sighed and held my hand again as if nothing unsalvageable had happened between us. "You'll still be the baby's Godmother, and Jessica will still be your best friend. We should just maintain our current positions, and we can still live life as we did before.
"Isn't it better that everything returns to normal? Jessica is still very weak right now and I need to prepare nutritious food for her. You should rest, and we'll prepare for our honeymoon tomorrow."
The man busied himself around the kitchen while I stared blankly at him. I watched as he boiled water expertly and checked every ingredient in case it was unhealthy for Jessica.
I was reminded how he had never done anything like this for me in the past three years, even when I got hurt while on a mission. I always assumed he was busy, but it turned out the leader of the James family was willing to find time in his busy schedule to take care of another woman.
A conversation I once had with Jessica suddenly flashed in my mind.
She told me that her health had not been great since young, and her ex-boyfriend went around Novak to find the best doctors to help nurse her back to health.
Jessica once told me a story about how she was once seriously sick in the middle of the night, and her ex-boyfriend sped to another city just to get a private doctor back to give her a checkup.
I had never thought much of the details of her story, but now, everything she said resurfaced in my mind. All of these years, I had lied to myself by purposely ignoring certain details.
Whenever I was out on a mission, Jessica would always be the one to put a gun in Frank's hand before I did. Whenever there was a family gathering, Jessica would be the one to blurt, "He's allergic to lemons."
Frank would always be the one to go to Jessica's rescue whenever she was discovered by the enemy during gunfights and, when she was sick, he would walk out of a meeting room full of people to speed toward the hospital.
During many of those moments, I had been holding documents I had organized through the night that required some of his time to look at.
It was only now that I realized I was not imagining things. I had lied to myself for too long.
Frank had expressed his love, but it was love that never belonged to me, and the last of the dignity I was keeping together by deceiving myself finally fell apart.
I was silent for a long time before finally saying, "Let's get divorced, Frank."
Chapter 2
Once, I was willing to leave my family for Frank, but now I was not afraid to leave him and start my life over again.
Frank stopped whatever he was doing and turned to look at me in surprise. He was about to say something when the phone rang. "What's wrong, young lady?"
He picked up the call without hesitation and smiled. "I've already sent someone to deliver the soup to you. You shouldn't be moving around after feeding the baby."
Frank paused suddenly and turned to look at me. "Are you asking about Damienne? She should be handling an emergency mission right now. You know how she can be. She forgets everything once she gets busy with her work."
After hanging up, Frank smiled with slight exasperation. "Jessica has no idea that I told you about the baby. She's worried that the truth will hurt you. Just pretend that you don't know anything. She doesn't want to lose a friend like you."
It nauseated me to hear his grandiose words. I tried my best to suppress my desire to throw up and said angrily. "Let's make it tomorrow. Let's dissolve our marriage tomorrow!"
Frank looked at me like I was a child throwing a tantrum. "Divorce? We just got married, Damienne. When did you become such a willful person? No one will be able to replace your position. You'll always be my only wife."
I did not want to argue with him, but I calmly stated the facts instead. "Willful? You lied to me that there was an emergency with your family, and left me alone to take care of my father's funeral. Was that considered understanding of me?
"You had a baby with her, and now you want me to pretend as if nothing has happened? Why should I?"
Frank opened his mouth, trying to say something, but for the first time, he had no idea what to say. All he did was quickly pack up the supplements he prepared for Jessica and leave the house.
I returned to my room and started packing my luggage, but I was constantly interrupted by texts from Jessica.
[My dear Damienne, why did you leave before I woke up? Look at your godson. Isn't he adorable?]
This was quickly followed by another text.
[The baby's father said that he'll take us all to a beach holiday once I feel healthier. You'll come with us too, right?]
Jessica still sounded like we were supposed to be close.
The next second, I received a photo of a man clumsily trying to carry the baby. The face was cut off, but the back of his right hand had a scar.
Five years ago, Frank risked his life to shield me when the enemy suddenly attacked. At that moment, I thought of Frank as my whole world. Since then, I did everything within my power to complete all the family's missions, especially the most dangerous ones that no one had the courage to accept.
I fought by Frank's side, from the moment he was a nobody in the James family until he rose through the ranks to become one of the most powerful men in the district.
Everyone told me that I would become the Donna of the family, and I looked forward to the day when my name could be registered alongside Frank's in the family register.
Right up until yesterday, I was still looking forward to my dream coming true, but Frank cruelly crushed that dream. He made me aware of how naive and stupid I was, and I was not interested in continuing this game of three.
I drove straight to the hospital to get to Jessica's hospital room to end this ridiculous charade, but when I got to the door, I heard Jessica sounding pitiful while trying to get Frank to say. "Would you stay this time if I asked you to?"
Frank did not answer her, but the next second, I received a text from him.
[You should leave for the honeymoon tomorrow first. I have last-minute business with the family to attend to.]
It was another ridiculous excuse.
My heart felt like it had been punched, and it hurt so much that I started heaving and breathing erratically.
I pushed the door open and said coldly, "Is it fun playing me like a fool? But it's fine, because I'm willing to give you my blessing."
With that, I turned to leave without any hesitation.
Chapter 3
Before I left, I found an unfamiliar safe in the study. I could tell that it was frequently used and that whoever owned it cherished it a lot. I decided to key in Jessica's birthday, and the safe opened.
Dozens of photo albums were found inside, along with notebooks that were arranged chronologically. I picked up the latest notebook and opened it. I could tell that whoever wrote it jotted everything down with care, and all the notebooks were crammed with details about Jessica.
They recorded Jessica's likes and dislikes, her mood every day, and her occasional discomfort. There were also records of her first pregnancy checkup date and results.
I felt dizzy, and the words in the notebook felt like ants munching their way through my heart.
The photo albums were filled with photos of Jessica. There were photos of her sleeping and her nervous expression from every time she left for a mission. There were also photos of her looking upset when she was hurt, and her blushing face when she was in the throes of passion.
There were also photos of Jessica tearing up before she was wheeled into labor.
All of those photos were records of every moment they shared together since they were 12.
Frank was the youngest son of the James family, and Jessica was the youngest daughter of the Brown family. They were a match made in heaven.
The most ironic thing about Frank's secret camera angles was my presence in the photos, but his camera focus was never on me.
My heart ached from the discovery, and I crouched on the ground while clutching my chest. Frank had started recording numerous moments between him and Jessica a long time ago, from a time when I was not in their lives.
Even though Frank was not in the photos, he was always looking at her from outside the camera shots.
We were together for three years, and the only photo we took with Frank inside was the wedding picture I had smashed. I never knew that he was good at photography, and whenever I mentioned wanting to take a photo together, Frank would always stare at me with a melancholic look in his eyes.
"Damienne, if my enemies knew of our relationship, they would use you to threaten me. You know we're not strong enough to fight them yet."
I understood his worry, which was why I learned to accept this for the past three years. I was reminded of my past, and everything I had sacrificed to become the woman good enough for Frank.
Over the years, I would do everything I could to make sure that the family's mission was completed to perfection, even if it meant getting hurt. The first time I left on a mission, I trembled nervously, but I did not dare contact Frank to maintain the facade of distance between us.
However, Frank would always be by Jessica's side to protect her whenever she was out on a mission.
This time, Frank used the excuse of being busy to abstain from our honeymoon, so I went ahead to change the itinerary from the Berg Island trip that I had looked forward to into a cruise in the neighboring state.
It turned out that Frank had already brought Jessica on a trip to Berg Island when she came of age to experience the brightest Northern Lights of the century.
Every generation of the James family had a tradition where the future heir would pick a secret location as a vacation home and safe house during times of crisis. Only his wife and the next heir were allowed to be there.
Frank always told me, "I'll take you there next time. Now isn't a good time."
That place was never mine to visit. Otherwise, why would Jessica stay there every time she was feeling down? They even took a photo there together, while I was just an outsider who did not fit in.
It felt like punishment for me to flip through the photo album. When I looked up from it, I realized that the tears had already dried on my face. I placed the photo album back where it was and emailed a message to a secret inbox set up by a middleman from the intelligence unit.
"I'm accepting the red alert mission you mentioned before. Make arrangements for Paul to pick me up. I'm leaving right now."
Chapter 4
The huge villa was so quiet that only the friction of the wheels on the ground could be heard. When I closed the gates to the villa, someone grabbed me hard and turned me over to face them. It was Frank, and he looked extremely upset.
He was looking at me like I was the enemy on the battlefield. "Jessica tried to kill herself because of what you said."
All I could hear was ringing in my ears. I was stunned.
"What did you say to her?" Frank stared at me angrily, his deep and calm eyes seemed to be oozing red. "You promised me to keep this a secret from her, Damienne. Jessica is your best friend, and she didn't tell you about this because she was afraid you'd get hurt.
"You know how she has always been of poor health since young and needs to be taken care of. Her emotions are in a fragile state right now after just giving birth, but you still insisted on agitating her. Do you plan to destroy her?"
Before I could reply, Frank stuffed me into the car. "You have a rare blood type just like her, Damienne. Only you can save her now."
Frank sped through several red lights in frustration and dragged me to the hospital. "Doctor, they have the same blood type. She can donate blood."
I had never seen Frank lose his composure like that.
All I could do was stand outside the surgery in a daze. My mind was blank as Frank dragged me into a room like a puppet to take my blood. He tore my sleeve violently, and that was when I realized Frank would also become a helpless madman when faced with life and death.
The doctor's voice suddenly boomed in my ears. "I'm sorry, sir, but this lady is pregnant. It isn't suitable for her to donate blood right now."
I looked up with a jerk and instinctively pulled my arm away to shield my belly, but Frank got closer to the doctor and stared him down while saying anxiously, "It's fine. Damienne has always been healthy. Taking a little blood from her won't affect anything."
His words made me tremble with anger, and I stared at the man in front of me with disbelief. "This is your baby too, Frank."
Frank looked at me with a frown. "I never said I won't acknowledge your baby as mine."
I stared back at him. "What do you mean?"
"Don't look at me that way, Damienne." Frank turned grim. "Jessica's life is still in danger right now. You can't prioritize the life of a baby who isn't even fully formed over Jessica. You've been friends for years!"
I could not help raising my voice. "When have I ever said I'd risk Jessica's life? But you should know that I'm the only one who can save her!"
With that, I pushed Frank away and ran for the door, but I felt a sudden cramp in my abdomen, and I fell forward. Frank caught me in his arms and put me on a bed. He was silent for several seconds before saying, "I know you're in a difficult spot, Damienne, but Jessica tried to kill herself because of what you said.
"You've always managed to heal well after getting hurt so many times in your missions. Losing little blood won't affect anything. Our baby isn't that fragile."
I did not have the strength to escape from his grip, and I could only watch as syringes of blood were taken from me and delivered to Jessica in the surgery room. My face turned paler by the minute, and I started to lose consciousness.
In the end, I could endure no longer and passed out.
Frank, who had been standing at the side quietly, suddenly said, "I'm not his Godfather. He should call me 'father'."
He was the Don of the James family and my husband, so I thought I misheard him as I looked up at him in disbelief. Frank smiled and repeated, "That's right. You didn't mishear me. This is my baby. I was with Jessica the day your father had the accident. What a night of passion that was."
